Posted

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a three-vehicle collision in Sumter County this morning that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist.

According to the FHP report, at approximately 9:05 am, a 69-year-old Winter Garden man driving a Ford Expedition was traveling westbound on State Road 50.

At the same time, a 58-year-old North Port man driving a Kenworth tractor-trailer transporting milk was traveling northbound on State Road 471.

At the intersection of the two roadways, the first vehicle ran a red traffic signal and collided with the passenger side of the second vehicle.

After the collision, both vehicles were redirected northwest into the southbound lanes of SR-471. The second vehicle collided with a Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by a 70-year-old Lakeland man who was traveling southbound on SR-471 in a left turn lane.

Lastly, as the tractor-trailer traveled to a final rest along the shoulder of the highway, the trailer overturned.  The transported load of milk was not spilled; however, scores of gallons of fuel from the vehicle did spill upon the roadway.

The motorcyclist suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash.

The tractor-trailer driver suffered minor injuries, while the driver of the first vehicle suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to an area hospital.

The FHP did not release the names of the drivers involved in the collision.
