Updating Breaking News: Driver dies after two-vehicle collision in Clay County

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a two-vehicle collision this morning in Clay County that resulted in the death of a driver.

According to the FHP report, at approximately 5:26 am, a 28-year-old Fleming Island woman driving a sport utility vehicle was traveling south in the center lane of US-17 approaching Pace Island Trace within Clay County.

At the same time, a 39-year-old Hilliard man driving a pickup truck was also traveling south on US-17 in the center lane and was stopped at a traffic light at US-17 and Pace Island Trace.

As they approached, the SUV failed to stop, causing the front of it to collide with the rear of the pickup truck. The SUV overturned several times and came to a final rest on US-17.

The SUV driver suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The pickup driver reported no injuries to the FHP.

All Southbound lanes of US 17 at Pace Island Trace are blocked during the investigation.

Motorists are encouraged to use caution in the area

The FHP did not release the names of the drivers involved in the crash.
