Breaking News Overnight: One dead, two injured after head-on collision in Charlotte County

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a two-vehicle collision in Charlotte County this morning that resulted in the death of a driver.

According to the FHP report, at approximately 1:06 am, a 69-year-old Punta Gorda man driving a pickup truck was traveling south (wrong way) on the northbound lanes of State Road 776 (Veterans Boulevard), south of Madaca Lane.

At the same time, a 31-year-old Englewood man driving a pickup truck was traveling north on the inside lane of Veterans Boulevard, approaching Madaca Lane.

As they approached, the first vehicle, traveling in the wrong direction, collided with the front of the second vehicle on the northbound lanes of State Road 776.

The first driver was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The passengers in the second vehicle were injured and transported to an area hospital. Positive identification for those passengers remains under investigation.

The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide Unit.

The FHP did not release the names of the drivers or the passengers involved in the crash.
