According to the FHP report, at approximately 3:09 pm, a 78-year-old Chesterfield, MA, man driving a sport utility vehicle was traveling north on US 41, north of Seagate Drive. (The SUV had been involved in a prior hit-and-run crash in Sarasota County).
At the same time, a 78-year-old Sarasota man riding an electric bicycle was traveling north on US 41 on the bicycle lane north of Seagate Drive.
As it approached, the SUV drifted into the bicycle lane and collided with the bicyclist, who sustained critical injuries and was transported to an area hospital.
After the crash, the SUV left the scene, and continued north on US 41. Approximately 1⁄2 mile later, the same SUV was involved in a third collision (a rear-end crash with no injuries).
The impact of this crash caused disabling damage to the SUV.
The SUV driver was arrested for Felony Leaving the Scene of a Serious Injury Crash and other moving violations and booked into the County Jail.
