A St. Augustine woman was killed Wednesday evening when a motorized scooter was struck from behind by an SUV on State Road 16, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The SUV continued across U.S. 1, hit a camera pole, and overturned in a nearby hotel parking lot.

A 64-year-old St. Augustine woman was killed Wednesday evening after a sport utility vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed struck the rear of her motorized scooter on State Road 16 in St. Johns County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 7:29 pm on SR 16 west of U.S. 1. Troopers said a 59-year-old St. Augustine man was driving an SUV eastbound in the right lane of SR 16 at a high rate of speed when he approached the scooter traveling in the same direction ahead of him.
According to the FHP report, the front of the SUV struck the rear of the scooter, ejecting the rider. After the collision, the SUV continued eastbound, struck a camera pole, crossed all lanes of U.S. 1, and traveled into the parking lot of the Flagler Inn, where it overturned and came to rest on its roof.
The scooter rider was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The SUV driver suffered serious injuries and was transported by emergency medical personnel for treatment.
The woman was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to FHP. Troopers did not immediately release the identities of those involved, pending notification of next of kin.
The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
