A 67-year-old man was killed and his passenger seriously injured after their motorcycle left County Road 309 and overturned Friday night in Putnam County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 10:57 pm, about half a mile north of Fort Gates Ferry Road.

According to the FHP, the motorcycle was traveling south on County Road 309 and negotiating a left-hand curve when the rider failed to maintain his lane. The motorcycle traveled off the pavement and continued south along the grass shoulder.

The motorcycle overturned after encountering uneven ground, throwing its 50-year-old female passenger. The driver became trapped beneath part of the motorcycle, according to the crash report.

The driver suffered fatal injuries. The passenger was seriously injured.

Neither occupant was wearing a helmet, the FHP reported. Both were identified as Putnam County residents, and authorities had notified the driver’s next of kin.

The crash remains under investigation.
