Posted

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a three-vehicle collision yesterday in Levy County that resulted in a driver suffering critical injuries.

According to the FHP report, at approximately 3:55 pm, a 19-year-old Chiefland man driving a pickup truck was traveling west on County Road 346 approaching the intersection of US 19.

At the same time, a 43-year-old Chiefland man driving a garbage truck was traveling north on US 19 in the outside lane approaching the same intersection, and an 18-year-old Chiefland man driving a road-painting truck was in the turn lane of US 19 southbound at the same intersection.

As the vehicles approached, the pickup driver failed to yield to oncoming traffic from the stop sign and entered the garbage truck's path.

The front of the second vehicle struck the left side of the pickup, resulting in heavy damage. The pickup split in half, with the cab of the truck continuing to travel northwest and striking the front of the painting truck before coming to a final rest facing northwest.

Vehicle two came to a controlled stop on the east shoulder of US 19 after the collision. Vehicle three came to a final rest facing south in the turn lane of US 19.

The pickup driver sustained life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision and was transported to UF Health Shands. A passenger in the pickup also sustained serious injuries and was transported to UF Health Shands.

The driver of the third vehicle was transported for minor injuries to UF Health Kanapaha in Gainesville.

The FHP did not release the names of the drivers or passengers involved in the collision.
