Updating Breaking News: Child hit and killed by SUV in Manatee County; driver arrested

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a pedestrian who was hit and killed yesterday in Manatee County.

According to the FHP report, at approximately 5:20 pm, a Dodge Journey) was traveling south on the Sunset Village Parking Lot (3715 14th Street West), east of US- 41.

At the same time, a 5-year-old Bradenton girl was playing in the same parking lot (in an area with parking spaces and a white-painted safety zone) with her siblings.

As the vehicle approached, the driver made a left turn into a parking space north of the laundromat, where the girl was playing, and collided with her.

The girl sustained critical injuries. The mother of the pedestrian (inside a laundromat at the time of the crash) transported her to an area hospital, who was later pronounced deceased.

The driver, Adrian Castillo, age 45, of Bradenton, was placed under arrest for driving with a suspended license - involving death and transported to the Manatee County Jail.

The crash remains under investigation.

The FHP did not release the name of the girl (pedestrian) or her mother.
