A 6-year-old girl has died following a crash on Wednesday afternoon involving a civilian vehicle and a Temple Terrace Police Department patrol unit at a busy intersection in Temple Terrace. According to investigators, the crash occurred around 3:58 pm at the intersection of East Fowler Avenue and North Drive.
Authorities said a Nissan Pathfinder, driven by a 36-year-old woman from Tampa, was traveling eastbound in the turn lane when the driver attempted a U-turn. At the same time, a Temple Terrace Police Ford Explorer, driven by a 25-year-old officer, was traveling westbound in the center lane approaching the intersection.
The Pathfinder turned into the path of the police vehicle and was struck.
Following the collision, both vehicles rotated and came to rest in a ditch along the north side of the roadway.
The driver of the Pathfinder and three young passengers—all from Tampa—were transported to area hospitals with what were initially described as non-life-threatening injuries. The officer driving the police vehicle was also injured and transported for treatment.
Authorities later confirmed that one of the passengers, a 6-year-old girl, died after being taken to the hospital due to injuries sustained in the crash.
Two other passengers—a 1-year-old and an 8-year-old, along with the driver of the Pathfinder, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
The FHP did not release the names of the drivers or motorcyclist involved in the collision.
