Breaking News Overnight: One dead, four seriously injured after head-on collision in DeSoto County

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a two-vehicle collision last night in DeSoto County that resulted in a driver's death, and four others seriously injured.

According to the FHP report, at approximately 7:47 pm Monday, a sedan driven by a 45-year-old Okeechobee man was traveling east on State Road 70, east of County Line Road.

At the same time, a sport utility vehicle driven by a  50-year-old Pinellas County woman was traveling west on State Road 70, east of County Line Road.

As they approached, the sedan driver entered the westbound travel lane, in an attempt to pass another eastbound traveling vehicle, and collided with the  front of the SUV head-on.

After the collision, the sedan traveled off the roadway and came to final rest on the southern ditch.
The SUV was redirected to the north, and overturned onto the north side ditch.

The sedan driver suffered critical injuries, was transported to an area hospital,  and  later pronounced deceased.

The SUV driver, along with three passengers (a 66-year-old Fruitland Park man,  a 31-year-old St. Petersburg woman and a 32-year-old St. Petersburg women) suffered serious injuries, according to the report.

The crash remains under investigation.

The FHP did not release the names of the drivers or passengers involved in the crash.
