A 34-year-old New Port Richey woman was killed early Sunday morning when a semi-truck struck a pickup truck that had stopped in a travel lane on Interstate 75 in Sarasota County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 12:08 am along northbound I-75 near mile marker 178.
According to the FHP report, the pickup truck was stopped in the right lane of the interstate while towing a trailer loaded with sod. At the time, two passengers had exited the vehicle to check on a possible tire issue with the trailer.
A semi-truck traveling northbound in the same lane approached the stopped vehicle and collided with the trailer and the left side of the pickup.
The driver of the pickup was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A 19-year-old Tampa man inside the pickup sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. Two others—a 33-year-old man from Alva and a 3-year-old child from New Port Richey—were outside the vehicle at the time of the crash and also suffered minor injuries. Both were taken to an area hospital for treatment.
The driver of the semi-truck, a 61-year-old man, sustained minor injuries and was also transported for medical care.
The crash remains under investigation.
