A 55-year-old Gainesville woman was killed early Friday after her vehicle crashed into stopped traffic on Interstate 75 in a chain-reaction collision caused by a backup from an earlier, unrelated crash, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 2:40 am on southbound Interstate 75 near Milepost 279 in Pasco County.
According to FHP, traffic had come to a stop because of an unrelated crash farther ahead on the interstate. A Toyota Camry driven by a 34-year-old Tampa man had stopped in the center lane, while a tractor-trailer operated by a 27-year-old Kentucky man had stopped in the outside lane.
Troopers said the Gainesville woman was driving a southbound Acura sedan in the center lane when she failed to stop for the backed-up traffic.
The Acura struck the rear of the Toyota Camry, then continued forward and collided with the rear of the stopped tractor-trailer.
The Gainesville woman suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Neither the Tampa man driving the Camry nor the Kentucky truck driver was injured in the crash.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal collision.
The FHP did not release the names of the drivers or passengers involved in the collision.
This is breaking news and may be updated as more details become available.
