From the Florida Highway Patrol
Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a two-vehicle collision this morning in Polk County that resulted in the death of a driver.
According to the FHP report, at approximately 12:27 AM, a Kia Sorento was traveling eastbound on I-4 at a high rate of speed.
Near the 38 Milepost, it overtook and collided with the rear of a Hyundai Sonata, which was also traveling eastbound.
Post-impact, the second vehicle was driven to a controlled stop while Vehicle 1 departed the roadway, entered the shoulder, and struck an electrical box. This collision caused the first vehicle to become airborne, at which point it struck a concrete traffic management equipment pole eight feet above its base, severing it before landing in a water-filled culvert.
The driver was ejected during the event and suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash. The driver of the second vehicle suffered minor injuries.
The FHP did not release the drivers' names involved in the collision.
