Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a multi-vehicle collision in Charlotte County last night that resulted in the death of a driver.

According to the FHP report, at approximately 8:05 pm, a 2023 Hyundai Tucson driven by a 45-year-old Port Charlotte man was recklessly traveling south on the El Jobean Bridge at a high rate of speed.

At the same time, a 2015 Ford Explorer driven by a 64-year-old Port Charlotte woman,  and a 2016 Nissan Versa driven by a 64-year-old Venice man were also traveling south on the El Jobean Bridge, ahead of the first vehicle.

As it approached, the front of the first vehicle sideswiped the second vehicle, continued to travel south and collided with the rear of the third vehicle.

The second driver reported no injuries to the FHP, but the driver of the third vehicle was pronounced deceased on the scene.

After an exhaustive on scene criminal investigation, the first driver, identified as Nathan Anthony Dion, age 45 of Port Charlotte, was arrested for Vehicular Homicide and DUI Manslaughter, and booked into the Charlotte County Jail.

The crash remains under investigation.

The FHP did not release the drivers' names of the second and third vehicles involved in the crash.
