Breaking News Overnight: Bicyclist hit and killed by SUV in Hernando County

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a collision between an electric bicycle and a vehicle last night in Hernando County that resulted in the death of the bicyclist.

According to the FHP report, at approximately 8:35 pm, an electric bike, operated by a 42-year-old Brooksville man, was traveling southbound on the Nature Coast Trail approaching a posted stop sign near the intersection of Highfield Road. 

At the same time, a Chevy Trailblazer sport utility vehicle driven by a 21-year-old Inverness man was traveling westbound on Highfield Road. 

At the trail crossing, the rider failed to stop, entered the path, and was struck by the SUV. 

The rider was transported to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries. 

The SUV driver was not injured during the incident. 

An unidentified adult female passenger riding on the electric bike suffered serious injuries and was also transported to an area hospital. 

The FHP did not release the names of the driver or bicyclists involved in the crash.
