A hit-and-run crash involving three vehicles early Monday morning on Interstate 75 left a semi-truck driver dead and another driver injured, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 6:28 am on April 20 in the southbound lanes of I-75 near mile marker 220, just south of the junction with State Road 64.
According to investigators, a dark-colored Ford Mustang traveling in the left lane veered into the center lane, colliding with a Chevy Trailblazer. The impact forced the SUV out of its lane and into the path of a semi tractor-trailer traveling in the right lane.
The SUV then collided with the semi, causing the truck to veer across all southbound lanes before overturning. The semi came to rest on its side and roof, partially in the grass median, blocking all three lanes of traffic.
The driver of the semi, a 34-year-old man from New Smyrna Beach, was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said. The driver of the Trailblazer, a 63-year-old man from Palmetto, suffered minor injuries.
Troopers say the driver of the Mustang briefly stopped after the crash before fleeing southbound on I-75.
The vehicle is described as a black Ford Mustang with rear-window louvers and possibly a mounted camera on the rear. The driver was described as a stocky male wearing a gray hoodie.
The Florida Highway Patrol’s Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating the crash and is asking anyone with information or video to come forward.
Anyone with information is urged to contact FHP by dialing *FHP (*347) or to contact Crime Stoppers.
