A patrol vehicle operated by a deputy with the Hernando County Sheriff's Office overturned multiple times Saturday morning after colliding with a civilian SUV at a busy intersection along U.S. 41, sending both drivers to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to authorities, the crash occurred at approximately 10:40 am as the 28-year-old deputy was traveling southbound on U.S. 41 and attempting to overtake another vehicle while initiating a traffic stop on a speeding motorist. At the same time, a 69-year-old Weeki Wachee man driving a Nissan Rogue was heading eastbound on Grand Entrada Boulevard.
Investigators said the Rogue entered the intersection and crossed the highway directly into the deputy’s path. The patrol vehicle struck the SUV, then overturned several times before coming to rest. The Nissan rotated and stopped in the travel lanes of the highway.
Both the deputy and the civilian driver sustained injuries that were described as non-life-threatening. Each was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
