A 71-year-old Vero Beach woman was killed Tuesday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Brevard County that remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 5:03 p.m. on southbound I-95 near mile marker 231, just north of Deering Parkway, according to an FHP press release.

Investigators said four vehicles were traveling in the inside southbound lane when traffic began slowing and stopping. A semi-truck with a possible orange cab or trailer was stopped in the center lane at the time of the crash.

According to FHP, a 24-year-old Titusville woman driving a 2023 Acura RDX failed to stop for traffic ahead and struck the rear of a 2026 Chevrolet Equinox driven by a 66-year-old Vero Beach man. The impact caused the Acura to rotate and strike the trailer of the unidentified semi-truck before both the Acura and Equinox traveled off the roadway and collided with a guardrail. The Equinox partially overturned over the guardrail.

The collision also pushed a 2021 Ford F-150 into the rear of a 2007 Buick LaCrosse that had stopped ahead in traffic, investigators said.

The 71-year-old female passenger in the Equinox was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Equinox was airlifted to Holmes Regional Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The Acura driver and the driver of the pickup truck were not injured and remained at the scene. The driver of the Buick sustained minor injuries and was transported to Parrish Hospital for treatment.

FHP said the driver of the semi-truck continued southbound on I-95 and has not been identified. Troopers are asking anyone with information about the truck or the crash to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash remains under investigation.
