An 85-year-old Daytona Beach woman was killed early Monday morning after her vehicle was struck from behind on Interstate 95 in Volusia County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 1:32 am on July 13 on Interstate 95 northbound near Mile Marker 248 (State Road 44).

According to FHP, a 2017 Lincoln Continental and a 2014 Kia Soul were traveling northbound in the center lane of I-95, with the Kia traveling ahead of the Lincoln.

Troopers said the 42-year-old Edgewater man driving the Lincoln failed to observe the Kia ahead and collided with the rear of the SUV.

The impact forced the Lincoln onto the outside shoulder while the Kia traveled off the roadway and into the median.

The Kia's driver, an 85-year-old Daytona Beach woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Lincoln driver suffered serious injuries and was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center for treatment.

The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
