Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a multi-vehicle collision this morning in Sumter County that resulted in the death of a 20-year-old mother and her seven-month-old child.
According to the FHP report, at approximately 9:12 am, a sedan driven by a 20-year-old Mascotte woman was traveling eastbound on County Road 476. A second sedan, driven by a 32-year-old Mascotte woman, was traveling southbound on State Road 471. A tractor-trailer, driven by a 57-year-old man from Winnsboro, SC, was traveling northbound on SR-471.
At the intersection, the first sedan failed to stop at a posted stop sign, entered the intersection, and collided with the second sedan, which rotated to a final rest on the west shoulder of SR-471. The first sedan continued and collided with the tractor/trailer. Both vehicles continued to final rest in the northbound lane of SR-471 and the east shoulder.
The driver of the first sedan suffered fatal injuries at the crash scene, as did her seven-month-old child. The driver and passenger in the second sedan were listed on the report as experiencing minor injuries, while the tractor/trailer driver reported no injuries.
The roadway was closed until 3:00 PM.
The FHP did not release the names of the drivers or passengers involved in the crash.
