Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol are looking for a driver who fled the scene of a fatal collision yesterday in Sumter County.
According to the FHP report, at approximately 5:30 pm, an unknown vehicle driven by an unknown driver was traveling southbound on County Road 475 and approaching a stop sign for the intersection of State Road 44.
At the same time, a Nissan Altima driven by a 32-year-old Inverness man was traveling westbound on State Road 44, approaching the intersection of County Road 475, and a Chevy pickup truck driven by a 29-year-old Oxford man was traveling eastbound on State Road 44, approaching the intersection of County Road 475.
As they approached, the first vehicle failed to yield and entered the intersection of the two highways.
To avoid a collision with the first vehicle, the second vehicle's driver steered to the left and into the eastbound lanes, colliding with the third vehicle.
Following the collision, both vehicles caught fire.
Transported to an area hospital, the driver of the third vehicle later died from injuries suffered during the crash.
The driver of the third vehicle and a passenger in the third vehicle (a 16-year-old female) suffered serious injuries in the crash.
The first vehicle was later described as a late model dark-colored SUV, possibly dark brown or dark blue.
