A 65-year-old Crystal River man was killed Tuesday afternoon after losing control of his electric bicycle and entering the path of a tractor-trailer on County Road 48 in Sumter County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 1:54 pm, east of County Road 575.

According to FHP, a tractor-trailer driven by a 70-year-old Valdosta, Georgia, man was traveling eastbound on County Road 48. At the same time, the Crystal River man was riding an e-bicycle eastbound along the south shoulder of the roadway.

Troopers said the bicyclist lost control of the e-bicycle before the tractor-trailer reached his location. The rider overturned into the travel lane, where he was struck by the eastbound truck.

The bicyclist suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver was not reported injured.

The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.

The FHP did not release the names of the driver or e-bicyclist involved in the crash.
