Breaking Overnight News: Pedestrian hit and killed by vehicle in Volusia County

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a collision last night in Volusia County that resulted in the death of a pedestrian.

According to the FHP report, at approximately 10:03 pm, a 26-year-old Deland man driving a 2013 Hyundai Genesis was traveling eastbound on Old New York Avenue approaching the intersection of Ridgewood Avenue.

At the same time, an 84-year-old Deland man in an electric wheelchair was crossing Old New York Avenue in a southerly direction, which was not in a marked crosswalk, and entered the direct path of the vehicle.

As a result, the front right of the vehicle struck the wheelchair.

The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the crash scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

The FHP did not release the names of the driver or the pedestrian.
