Breaking News Overnight: Two dead after a two-vehicle collision in Highlands County

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a two-vehicle collision last night in Highlands County that resulted in the death of a driver and passenger.

According to the FHP report, at approximately 9:50 pm, a sedan driven by a 17-year-old male resident of Sebring was traveling south on the inside southbound lane of US-27, north of Lake Josephine Drive.

At the same time, a pickup truck driven by an 18-year-old Lake Placid man was traveling south on the outside southbound lane of US 27, north of Lake Josephine Drive.

As they approached, the first vehicle attempted to change onto the outside lane, and collided with the pickup truck.

After the collision, the second vehicle traveled off the roadway, entered the grass median, and overturned multiple times.

Driver 2 and Vehicle 2 Passenger were unrestrained and ejected.

The driver of the second vehicle and a passenger (a 17-year-old female resident of Lake Placid) sustained critical injuries, were transported to area hospitals, and were later pronounced deceased.

The crash remains under investigation.

The FHP did not release the names of the drivers or passengers involved in the crash.
