Updating Breaking News: Pedestrian hit and killed by vehicle in Volusia County

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a collision this morning in Volusia County that resulted in the death of a pedestrian.
According to the FHP report, at approximately 5:59 pm, a 44-year-old Daytona Beach man driving a 2021 Ford F-550 was traveling eastbound on State Road 40 (West Granada Boulevard), approaching Booth Road in the outside lane.
At the same time, a 32-year-old Ormond Beach man was walking westbound on the eastbound outside paved shoulder just west of Booth Road.
As he approached, the driver drifted from the outside lane onto the paved shoulder and struck the pedestrian, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.
After the crash, the driver stopped briefly in a nearby parking lot. During the investigation, the FHP learned the driver believed he struck an animal in the roadway and then drove home.
The vehicle was taken into evidence, and the crash remains under investigation.
The FHP did not release the names of the driver or the pedestrian.
