Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a collision last night in Sumter County that resulted in the death of an operator and a passenger in a golf cart.
According to the FHP report, at approximately 9:35 pm, a golf cart driven by a 64-year-old Lady Lake man was traveling westbound on CR-109.
At the same time, a Kia Soul, driven by a 23-year-old Eustis woman, was traveling southbound on US-27.
At the intersection of the two roadways, the golf cart operator failed to stop for a red traffic signal, entered the path of the second vehicle, and was struck by it.
Upon impact, the golf cart overturned, with both coming to final rest at the southwest corner and west shoulder of the intersection, respectively.
The golf cart operator and a passenger (a 58-year-old woman from the Villages) in the golf cart were transported to an area hospital, where they later died from injuries suffered during the crash.
The driver of the second vehicle and one child passenger were transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.
The FHP did not release the names of anyone involved in the crash.
