A 50-year-old Brooksville woman riding a bicycle was killed Friday night in a hit-and-run crash on U.S. 41, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened south of Ancient Trail at approximately 8:30 p.m.
FHP said the woman was riding north on U.S. 41 when a northbound Chevrolet Cobalt overtook her and struck her bicycle. Investigators believe the car was manufactured between 2005 and 2009.
The Cobalt’s driver continued north on U.S. 41 without stopping, leaving the bicyclist in the roadway, according to FHP.
Shortly afterward, a northbound Dodge Charger driven by a 51-year-old Floral City woman approached the crash scene. The driver could not see the hazard in the roadway and struck the bicyclist, troopers said.
The Charger’s driver remained at the scene. The bicyclist suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the crash site.
FHP is searching for the Cobalt and its driver. No further description of the vehicle or driver was released.
