A 55-year-old Barefoot Bay woman was killed early Thursday when an SUV struck her while she was walking through a marked crosswalk on U.S. 1, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred at approximately 5:07 am at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Barefoot Boulevard in Brevard County.
FHP said a 2011 Kia Soul was traveling south on U.S. 1 in the inside lane as it approached the intersection. The pedestrian was walking west across U.S. 1 within the intersection’s southern crosswalk.
The SUV’s driver, a 68-year-old Palm Bay man, told investigators that he entered the intersection on a green traffic signal but did not see the woman in the crosswalk.
Troopers have not determined what color the traffic signal displayed at the time of the collision.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and his passenger, a 58-year-old Palm Bay woman, were not injured and remained at the crash site.
The investigation is continuing.
The FHP did not release the names of the driver or pedestrian involved in the crash.
