Three people were killed and five others were seriously injured Monday morning in a head-on crash in Volusia County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:58 a.m. at the intersection of State Road 40 and Lake Winona Road.

Investigators say a 2023 Honda HR-V traveling eastbound failed to negotiate a curve and crossed into the westbound lane, where it collided head-on with a 2021 Ford Expedition.

The driver of the Honda, a 21-year-old man from Port Orange, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers in the vehicle—a 23-year-old man from Melbourne and a 22-year-old woman from Gainesville—also died from their injuries.

All three occupants of the Honda were wearing seatbelts except for one passenger, according to the report.

The driver of the Ford Expedition, a 35-year-old Ocala man, and four passengers—a 39-year-old woman, a 16-year-old girl, a 14-year-old girl, and an 11-year-old girl—were transported to Halifax Medical Center with serious injuries. All occupants in that vehicle were wearing seatbelts.

Troopers say the crash remains under investigation.
