Breaking Morning News: FHP detains suspect in fatal hit-and-run collision with a bicyclist in Orange County

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol responded to a collision this morning in Orange County that resulted in the death of a bicyclist and a driver who fled the scene.

According to the FHP report, at approximately 9:19 am, a Dodge Ram pickup truck was traveling southbound on South Orange Blossom Trail north of 43rd Street in the outside lane.

At the same time, a 43-year-old Orlando man riding a bicycle was traveling west iin the marked crosswalk.

As they approached, the pickup driver failed to stop for the bicyclist ahead, which resulted in the vehicle colliding with the bicycle.

The bicyclist was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center and pronounced deceased. 

After the collision, the pickup driver fled the scene.

Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff's Office located the vehicle, abandoned and on fire behind a nearby business. Later, deputies detained a suspect matching a description provided by a witness.

FHP is still gathering evidence to confirm who drove the vehicle during the collision. The vehicle has been taken into evidence, and charges are pending.

The crash remains under investigation.

The FHP did not release the name of the driver or bicyclist involved in the crash.
